Treat Others fairly & With Respect
In the most basic and straightforward terms, don’t be an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. No one wants to be around or work with someone who treats them like trash and is constantly angry or mean. By treating others respectfully, you build relationships with those around you and show everyone that you are a team player. You are consistent in your actions, know what others bring to the table (because you’ve built relationships with them) and are empathetic. If you successfully do all of these things, people will want to be around you and want to work with you.
I’ve been fortunate to have had some of the best supervisors in the world. The military is a small place. I’ve worked for and with some leaders that I would gladly work for again. One leader, let’s call him Ronald, had a profound effect on me. The way that he did all of these things had such a profound impact on me. I reached out via email to him to see what he was up to and he told me that he was getting promoted. I was not at all surprised. I responded with congratulations and let him know that when he needs a public affairs officer, I would gladly move to wherever he is and work for him again. Do you feel this way about your boss? Do those around you think this highly of you?
